Baal worship was rooted in sensuality and involved ritualistic prostitution in the temples. At times, appeasing Baal required human sacrifice, usually the firstborn of the one making the sacrifice (Jeremiah 19:5). The priests of Baal appealed to their god in rites of wild abandon which included loud, ecstatic cries and self-inflicted injury (1 Kings 18:28). In Matthew 12:27, Jesus calls Satan “Beelzebub,” linking the devil to Baal-Zebub, a Philistine deity (2 Kings 1:2). The Baalim of the Old Testament were nothing more than demons masquerading as gods, and all idolatry is ultimately devil-worship (1 Corinthians 10:20).
This astonishing display in NYC represents America's breathtaking descent into debauchery and idolatry.
But in the ancient case, Israel ignored the warnings and plunged even deeper into apostasy, immorality, ungodliness and brazen defiance of God. America is following the exact same template of judgment, the same course and the same progression.
But Israel’s defiance of God was linked to a specific entity – the god Baal. Baal was the god to whom they sacrificed their children, before whom they practiced sexual immorality and called good “evil” and evil “good.” Baal was the god in whose name Israel persecuted the prophets and the righteous of their day.
Baal was their anti-god, their substitute for the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the god of their apostasy and the god of their destruction. Baal was their devil god. In fact the name for satan, Beelzebul and Beelzebub, is derived from Baal – meaning “Baal of the flies” and “Baal of dung.”
... As much as America has driven God out of its life and waged war against His ways, as much as America has sacrificed millions of its unborn children, as much as it has called evil “good” and good “evil,” as much as it has celebrated sexual immorality, and as much as it has persecuted the righteous – it is following after the god Baal, animated by the spirit of Baal.
... It took place on a rainy Monday afternoon, Sept. 19, 2016. It happened in the city of the harbingers of judgment – New York City. No one who erected it or who unveiled it had any idea what they were doing ...
One of the centers of Baal worship in ancient times was Palmyra, Syria. The city contained not one but two prominent temples to Baal. The Romans erected an arch there to lead to the Temple of Baal. So the worshipers of Baal would walk through the arch and approach the temple in which they would venerate their god. This arch that led to the Temple of Baal was reproduced down to the smallest detail and erected in New York City.
It was erected in the park outside City Hall. It sat covered in a giant sheet to keep it cloaked until the time of its unveiling. Seats were set up around the veiled arch so that leaders and dignitaries could watch.
Before the moment of unveiling, a live band began playing Middle Eastern music. As one listened to the drumbeat, one could imagine similar music being played as worshipers ascended the ancient Temple of Baal.
A black slate of stone sat at the side of the arch reminding the people of the connection. On the slate was an image of an ancient temple with the words “Temple of Bel (Baal).”
... And then the moment came: to the sound of the Middle Eastern instruments, and to the applause of those gathered, the giant sheet was pulled off of the object to reveal the ancient arch – looking very much the same as it would have to Baal’s ancient worshipers in Palmyra – only now it stood in a new land – America.
... When I stood on Capitol Hill, one year earlier, and spoke before leaders and members of Congress, I said this:
As Elijah stood on top of Mount Carmel and cried out to Israel in its hour of decision, in between two altars and two gods, his voice now cries out to America and says to us, “Choose you this day whom you will serve.” Seventy years ago, the chaplain of the United States Senate cried out in the same voice, and said to this nation, “If the Lord be God, then folllow Him! But if Baal, then follow him … and go to hell!”
There are remarkable parallels between what is happening in early 21st century America and what history records of the the ancient divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel where the lifestyle of sexual license and human sacrifice was foisted upon the people by the ruling elites.
The ruling elites of ancient Judah and Israel were increasingly influenced by the surrounding Canaanite religious culture than by the Mosaic Constitution. Nonetheless, the commoners often enjoyed nature worship as much as their leaders, leaving prophets of the Old Testament sometimes comparing themselves to jackals (Micah 1:8), or roaming the streets of Jerusalem looking for at least one righteous man (Jeremiah 5:1-14). The population at large was completely oblivious to the approaching doom which the Old Testament prophets foresaw and repeatedly forecast. The fact that this downhill process in the Old Testament was over 200 years in the making only contributed further to their false sense of security.
So addictive were the cultic practices of Baal worship that slowly and inexorably enveloped the entire country, that it completely corrupted the religious, political and business institutions and eventually bled God’s people dry (Hosea 2:1-13). It was a long painstaking process, but it finally choked off what was left of the Mosaic Constitution and the associated blessings of the promised land, leaving the country in agricultural and economic misery. The agricultural and economic prosperity which God richly gave them was wasted on Baal nature worship (Hosea 2:8). Wallowing in such self induced misery and poverty, the depopulation of the promised land ensued. Finally, Baal worship finished Israel off with child sacrifice (2 Kings 17:1-18). The fertility of nature was often associated with the killing of children. [The modern incarnation of child sacrifice is of course the politically acceptable and expedient act of abortion.]
In the Northern Kingdom of Israel, what started out with freedom under the rule of law (Exodus), devolved into mysticism and political tyranny (1 Kings 21), collapsing under conspiracy and military coups, and finally ending with the Assyrian invasion and exile (2 Kings 14:28-17:18) in 722 BC. Even Judah ignominiously ended with child sacrifice and ultimately cannibalism (Jeremiah 19:1-13) during the Babylonian invasion 120 years later.
Nature worship and environmentalism has been slowly replacing America's Judeo-Christian heritage that so many have taken for granted. This 'evolutionary' process largely began in America in the 1960's as the sexual revolution coincided with a 'get back to nature' attitude that continues unabated to this day. In fact, America's previous love for the pioneering days of old has been hijacked by a romanticized view of nature that is far more in line with what the original pioneers fought against when they tamed the western frontier. The Genesis mandate to subdue and fill the earth (Genesis 1:26-31) was part and parcel of the Manifest Destiny doctrine that conquered the west. Today, this is an embarrassment to the ruling elites, revealing a remarkable change of attitude that is far reaching in its consequences, and has the potential to completely reverse what originally built America.
The prevailing attitudes in America are not something new. They have roots in ancient paganism, with the best historical example found in the history recorded in the Old Testament. Israel, after having conquered the promised land (Joshua - 1400 BC), later became infatuated with the nature worship and sexual decadence of Baalism (850-600 BC). This eventually led to the nation's demise and subsequent destruction, reversing the conquest of Joshua and sending the Jews into the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles respectively.
The resurgence of paganism has predictable consequences with demonic activity becoming more commonplace. As the light of the gospel is driven from the public square, the dark vacuum that is left is eagerly filled. In the United States, over the past 10 years, the number of official Roman Catholic exorcists has more than quadrupled and yet is still unable to keep up with the demand. Warning that "evil is a reality", they cite the increase in drug and pornography addiction, the failure of the mental healthcare system and increasingly popular "pagan activities", such as using a Ouija board to summon the dead, as being among the factors contributing to the huge increase in demand for the Rite of Exorcism.
In early 21st century America, barring national repentance or a Josiah-like leader, history is about to repeat itself.
